MacBook Pro (Rev G)
The 15" MacBook Pro (Rev G), which was announced at WWDC 2009. My model is the Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8GHz, 4GB DDR3 Memory and nVIDIA 9400M & 9600M GT 512MB.

Opening the MacBook Pro
To open the MacBook Pro you need to remove the ten Phillips head (cross) screws from the back panel. I recommend using a PH00x20mm precision screwdriver. Please note that the screws are different lengths and therefore it is important to note which holes they were removed from, to simplify the re-assemble process.

Phillips (cross) screws
The ten screws are easy to remove and should only take a few minutes. Once all ten are removed the back panel of the MacBook Pro can be lifted off.
-
Inside the MacBook Pro
The hard drive is located in the bottom left corner (next to the battery). For reference the memory is located in the center. Both hard drive and memory upgrades do not void your Apple warranty, however removing the battery does and therefore battery replacements should only be handled by an approved Apple engineer.

Removing the hard drive
To remove the hard drive you need to first remove the locking bracket. This involves removing the two black screws located at the top of the hard drive bay (furthest from the edge). Once removed the locking bracket can be lifted clear and the hard drive will slot out. Be sure to unplug the power/SATA cable before lifting the hard drive clear.
-
Hard drive removed
Once the hard drive has been removed you are left with the empty bay and power/SATA cable. This cable runs under the hard drive and is not stuck down like previous MacBook Pro versions.
-
Remove the tab
The original hard drive has a tab to help with removal. This can easily be removed and attached to your new hard drive.
-
Remove the mounting screws
The original hard drive has four mounting screws. These need to be removed using a T6 TORX screwdriver.
-
New hard drive
Attach the mounting screws and tab to the new hard drive. This process should only take a few seconds.
-
Install the new hard drive
Install the new hard drive (remembering the power/SATA cable) and re-attach the locking bracket. You are now ready to re-assemble the back panel.
