Upgrade a MacBook Pro (Rev G) Hard Drive

I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro's hard drive to an Intel X25-M 160GB SATA Solid-State Drive (34nm, G2). I own a Revision G MacBook Pro which was introduced at WWDC in 2009. Unlike the previous revision MacBook Pro, to be able to replace the hard drive you need to fully remove the back panel, however this does not void your Apple warranty.

I have put together a short screenshot guide explaining the upgrade process. However, before you get started make sure you have the following two tools:

  1. Phillips #00 Screwdriver - A small "cross" screwdriver.
  2. T6 TORX Screwdriver - The less common "star" screwdriver is required to remove the hard drive mounting screws.

The entire process should not take more then ten minutes and does not require a high level of technical skill. If you have any questions feel free to contact me or drop a comment below.

Upgrade a MacBook Pro (Rev A-E) Hard Drive

I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro's hard drive to a 500GB Western Digital Scoropio Blue which can be purchased from Amazon for around £65. I own a Revision E MacBook Pro which was the last model before Apple moved to the "Unibody" enclosure. This means that to be able to replace the hard drive you literally need to disassemble the entire laptop and unfortunately void your warranty. Therefore if your MBP is still under warranty I recommend you speak to Apple before proceeding.

To complete the process I followed iFixIt's guide which in my opinion can't be made any better. This guide should work for any MBP revision A to E (early 2006 to early 2008).

One word of warning before you sit down to crack your MBP open ensure you have the following three tools:

  1. Phillips #00 Screwdriver - A small "cross" screwdriver.
  2. T6 Torx Screwdriver - An unusually small "star" screwdriver. Be warned many Torx sets will only go as low as T8.
  3. Spudger - A non-metal tool for removing computer parts. Normally made from tough anti-static plastic.

To help complete the process and backup the iFixIt guide I have added my own gallery of the upgrade process.
