Introducing Firefox Mobile

A few days ago Mozilla unveiled the official Firefox Mobile (Fennec) logo, known as Pocketfox. The logo was submitted to Mozilla by Yaroslaff Chekunov as part "Firefox Goes Mobile" design challenge.

Released just a few days after the new logo was Firefox Mobile Beta 5, which is available for the Nokia N810 and N900. Current reports state that the beta is still very slow and buggy, however it is nice to see Mozilla making progress in the mobile market (even if it is only for Nokia devices). Firefox Mobile features include:

  • AWESOMEBAR Integration - The same AWESOMEBAR you use on the desktop Firefox.
  • Security - Includes a password manager, pop-up blocker and automatic updates.
  • Add-ons - you can find and install add-ons straight to the device
  • Device Geolocation - The browser has built in geolocation for web apps such as Google Maps.
  • Gesture Support - Gesture enabled swipe left and right to expose and hide navigation and tabs.

I would still love to see Firefox Mobile come to iPhone or Android, although unfortunately due to code restriction it does not look like we will see this anytime soon.
