Introducing Moom

I'm a big fan of Mac OS X! It's fast, reliable and unlike other operating systems, it is quick and easy to learn, primarily because things "just work".

However, as with all software, OS X is not perfect. One area that has always confused me is the "zoom button", or more commonly known as the little green orb in the top left corner of every application window. If you ask Apple they will say the zoom button "toggles the window between the user state and the standard state". However I prefer to think of it as the "random windows size button", as it seems to change the window size, but never exactly how I expect it to. Personally I would actually prefer it if the zoom button would work more like the maximize button in Windows, because at least this is predictable.

Thankfully the development team over at Many Tricks have done what Apple have failed to do and made the zoom button worth having. Introducing Moom!

Moom is a simple application that integrates seamlessly and beautifully with OS X. It can be downloaded from the developers website or the Mac App Store and once installed you will probably wonder where the application is or what it's doing. It's not until you hover your mouse over the zoom button that Moom shows its itself. As you can see from the image below, instead of getting a "random windows size button", you can now pick exactly what you want the window to do. For example, full screen, move position, switch display, resize, etc.

You can even customise the Moom pop-up to your exact needs, for example I like my browser window to be a set size (1280x800), so I configure a Moom button to automatically re-size and move the window to the center of my main display. Perfect, and it can all be done with a single click. Moom really is that easy.

So Apple, I hope you are reading this? Moom should be core functionality in OS X, it's that good!

Moom is available now from the developers website or the Mac App Store for £2.99 and it integrates perfectly with OS X Snow Leopard and Lion. This (alongside Alfred) is a must have application for any Mac user.
